Good Morning

Doing a quick pre check for my Sunday meetings and responsibilities and wanted to share this.  Have a wonderful Sabbath day.
This was taken on a trip to Moab while we lived in Grantsville.  The overlook at Dead Horse Point.
Byron learning to water the garden.  I would say around 1958.  Shortly after we moved the first Chicken Coop as the cement floor is still there. The second one had not yet been moved.

Love you all.

Reflections on Freedom

This year I have flown more than 100,000 miles to-date, more than I have ever traveled before. My time on the road has provided opportunity to be exposed to diverse peoples, perspectives, and cultures. I have learned many lessons from these experiences. Perhaps some of these lessons could be valuable to you in some way. I will share a few, including a brief reflection on the freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America.

Freedoms
Each time I travel to China, I am harshly reminded of the marvelous and immeasurable freedoms we are blessed to enjoy as citizens of the United States of America. From freedom of expression to freedom to move about, each such removed privilege is felt in a painful way. I hope not to shed a negative light on China or its people. I love them deeply, beyond what my simple words can express. This is not a reflection on what they don't have, so much as it is a reflection on what we do have.

What is most poignant to me in reflecting on this trip revolves around trust. While some may disagree on this point, I feel I am trusted as a citizen in the US, which has a myriad of consequences. A few of the things I missed: I am free to move about my state or country without designated permission. I am free to access untold amounts of digital information without tying it to my identity. I am free to share my thoughts on any given topic, uncensored, in public forums without fear of repercussion. I am free to speak with whom I wish about what I wish.

Each of these freedoms is based in the trust that is given me by the tenants of our foundation. In the absence of trust we are thrust into an inhuman experience, where we are pinned against one another, abused by the powers that fear dissent, and thwarted in our desires to truly live.

Yes, that is right. A barbecue joint in Beijing. And let me say, it is better than most places I have been in the US. Has become a must-stop for me, and helps remind me of home :)
Flight
Having spent almost an entire week floating above the clouds, I have had opportunity to reflect on the miracle of flight. For millennia man looked to the heavens and wondered what it had to offer, having only the creatures of the air to fuel their imaginations. And here I am 39,000 feet above the face of the earth, rocketing through the air at 600 miles per hour. Having grown up flying, I don't know that I was ever struck with the pure awe of flying until I took the time to reflect on its inception and its power for good. I can imagine no other way that flight could have been realized without divine revelation.

When I fly it almost exclusively to conduct business. Yet I gain so much more than business engagement. I meet new people, explore cultures, share insights, and learn life lessons. Perhaps my favorite time flying comes as I look out over the grand expanse of space and ponder on things above the frivolity of our world. Today I stared in awe at God's painting in the sky, splattered in the deepest oranges, pinks, and other untold colors (some day I'll see them). Then to peer into the deep darkness of the night sky, illuminated by stars and galaxies untold. And to be awakened (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) by the brightness of the morning sun creeping in to push away the darkness of the long night. Brilliance peering over the clouds to bring a fresh day.

I was treated to a local breakfast by one of my friends. A rather spicy soup, flat break, and pork and noodle stuffed bread. It was simply amazing.
Everyone is a Teacher
I like to think that I sometimes have a grasp on life, that perhaps I know what is going on. Then I am reminded that I don't! I spent the last two weeks traveling with a diverse group of people, spending upwards of 18 hours a day with them. I was the leader, the one in charge, the one who knew everything. And yet how little I really knew. As I took the time to talk, it created opportunity to listen. And when I listened I learned. I learned from each person I spent time with. They unknowingly taught me life lessons, answered soul-searching questions, and provided foundation for contemplation and personal exploration. Everyone can be a teacher if you let them be yours.

The beach in Qingdao, China. It was beautiful, though not a place I would want to swim :) The best part was what we found on the rocks... brides, brides and more brides! There were at least 20 bridal shoots going!
The Power of Family
While I have been away, I have felt the power of family, the power of prayer, the power of love. I appreciate and treasure the love and support of our family. It is an anchor for me and my little family. Thank you.
A quick small-boat tour on West Lake in Hangzhou China. West Lake is said to have formed from the tears of a broken-hearted lover. There is obviously more to the story... To get a boat, you had to stand on shore and try to convince the boat captain that he should pick you instead of the other 40 people standing there. I was fortunate enough to have a lovely colleague with us who persuaded (can we say) with her looks.
My travels for the year are not over, with my next departure coming in just a few days, and another extended venture to China in October. With each departure comes the chance to learn and explore the world around me, and hopefully thereby become a better person and better conduit to perform the work of God.

A Sampling of What We Found...

This past weekend we had a wonderful Day to Serve here Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia.  The governors of each state collaborated and declared and the Church also became a strong supporter.  The premise that groups and organizations will work together for community benefit.  Our ward sponsored three projects.  Cleaning a cemetery, cataloging grave monuments and scanning old newspapers.  It was a wonderful experience.  A family outcome was an offer to us to use a high speed scanner to digitize our family photographs.  Well, we have them done!  Well, we think so, we are finding some hear and there.

So here is a quick look as some of the hidden treasures we uncovered...

Snapshot Sunday . . . ish

I'm a little slow, but better late than never!

We decided to get more chickens to either add to our flock or replace our current hens who aren't laying very well.
Right after we made that decision and started planning and preparing Hyrum broke the window.  Fortunately, I was able to keep it together and not yell at anyone.  Score for me!!!  Fortunately, it is double paned, so we still had a pane of glass.
We were victorious and finished the tractor and got the chickens.  They are so cute!!

Simon loves the garden.  Mostly he loves picking tomatoes.

I finally took a few soccer pictures.  Cell phone pictures from a distance aren't great, but Joshua is having a great season!

I love watching him throw the ball in.  He is one strong kid!

Poor Simon had a rough week, but he is doing much better now.

Ok, I'm off to get feed for the animals.  Always busy!  It is crazy to think that the most of the pigs will be gone soon.  It will be nice to see the fruit of our labors!  Have a great week!

Photo Friday

At the Relief Society retreat with some friends. It was at Heber Valley Camp in Utah.
As soon as I came back I called Mom to discuss it as a possible reunion location.
It was so cool! And so affordable, and could accommodate numbers such as ours :).

My three trouble makers spending a sweet moment with each other.

My sister and her husband with their arms around their son who was about to get baptized.
Deployment, diagnosis on the autism spectrum, and adoption are all part of their story,
which made for am emotional affair watching this little boy get baptized by his dad.

We took the girls to Temple Square on Labor Day.

Most afternoons our living room sees this scene. We are the home on the block that
attracts kids. I wanted to take a picture of the dance party, but Jaime hurt her leg right
as I took the picture and changed the feel :). But I wanted to show how Vida was quietly
reading a book while everyone danced and was crazy together. She likes her quiet time.

Farm life?

Some friends from church gave it as a gift. Needless to say, the kids are ecstatic.

Why Family Matters

Our last family text was amazing to me and brought tears to my eyes. I knew I could not answer Michelle's query with a text because it would be too long and I'm a horrible texter (although talking a text is a new thing I'm experimenting with).  I've been pondering this and I've come up with my basic thoughts....so here you go...

First of all, the family is the basic unit of society.  It allows us a small, secure, protected place to learn the things that matter in life.  I think one of the most important things we learn in a family is the importance of working together. By this I mean that we "learn to play" with others and to respect their viewpoints (which are probably different than mine); to be tolerant; to understand that there might be something or someone at least as important as "me".  We learn that by working together we can accomplish great things.  Even as we've become an extended family, we have seen this at work in our lives.  Look at what we accomplished with Marquie's wedding reception by all working together and gleaning from everyone's strengths.

Secondly, the family unit is the place that we learn God. It allows us a small, secure, protected place to learn the things that matter in eternity.  Even if we don't teach or even believe God.  In a family we learn to LOVE as God loves. We learn to put others needs, wants and desires above our own. As a young woman,  it truly amazed me that I found a man (or he found me) that I could love more than anything in the world. A few years later, we had a beautiful baby boy and my love grew to love  him, also more than anything in the world.  I still remember,  shortly before Heather was born, as I sat with James one night singing him to sleep, that I couldn't imagine loving anyone more than I loved him and if that love could possibly extend to another child.  When Heather was born, and Michelle, and Justin and Marquie were born, my love extended to include you all. Look at our family today and I feel the same way as each person has joined our family, even those who were not "born" into our family.

In a family we learn to SERVE as God serves.  We learn that we support each other, even if we don't want to or it is inconvenient.  We learn that if it is important to someone in the family, it is important to us all. We go to softball games and cheer the players on...or defend the umpire...when he is our Dad.  We go to football games, even when we are terrified of the pain those men inflict upon each other.  We go to musicals and grow and extend our view of life as we realize how much we love that genre. And are amazed in all ways when those things are done so well.   We learn that fasting and praying together for things that are important in anyone's life may be the only way we can serve each other, but it is so powerful when we fast together.  We learn with a little "gingerbread" man that there is great joy in creating joy in others. And, we come to realize, through service, that "men are that they might have joy".

So, there you go. My ponderings on why family matters.

Workman Family Celebration

Downloading my monthly pictures I thought including a few from the Workman Celebration would be good.
Part of the family story is Dale giving Darleen a ride home after work from the Arctic Circle.  Interesting, Byron did the same.  Different Arctic Circle, same wonderful times.

Playing marbles with great grandpa.

Michelle and Marquie playing the role of protective hens.

Old Fashioned fun.

The dance.  Kara, Nikki and Melanie sang, Adam and Abby danced and then they brought G/G on.  Don't think anyone could even see the dancing through the tears, especially mom!

Not the reunion but a memory of serving at the temple.  Had the youth with us that day and it was wonderful.

Grandpa and Grandma This Week

As I sit here this morning and see all of the wonderful pictures and enjoy them so much I felt mom and I should be more involved with this and share what is going on with us.  We feel so involved with the texting that we don't get around to the blog, but since we enjoy it we feel...  Oh well, you get the picture.  So here are some pictures from the last few weeks, or is it months...

As I went through my pictures I found that mostly what I have are graduation pictures, so, that is what we are posting.

After the ceremony.

What boy doesn't love to play in water.

Isn't there a song about sisters?

The one ready to have this done and get back to the water.

HFAC and "Y" Mountain.  Graduation day is so wonderful.

I love football!

Little blurry, sorry. Kids first game!  Crazy trying to watch, cheer, and teach them what is going on. I think we are officially a football family!  Woohoo!  Feel free to join us anytime.

Photo Friday

Most of our lives is spent in school or at soccer, but I forgot my phone at the game this week, so I promise to do better next week.  There are six games next week, so I should be able to get something!  But our highlight this week were the snakes, so here are some fun pics from that.

Michael was very proud that he got to be a helper.  They held the big snake and helped the little kids get to hold her.

Joshua was learning to make pancakes this week. Other than the mixup of baking powered and corn starch he did great.  So, I let him do it again.  The second time was much better.  He was even confident enough to try shapes.  He made this shape which is 'rocket' a character in Little Einsteins.  If you haven't watched the show it is charming and great for younger kids.  Hyrum loves it and it is on Netflix!

I look forward to pictures and updates from everyone else!
