Goalie

I decided that the goalie is one of the most important positions in soccer but also one of the most boring positions when you are on the winning team. It was fun to watch the boys as they each got to take a turn as the goalie. Michael played in the net and almost got stuck, but Joshua, well you know, was just jumping and playing the whole time.

I think we all feel like goalies sometimes in life waiting for something amazing to happen but really need to learn to enjoy every moment even if it isn't a spectacular event.

the cake lady

Photobucket
Walking down the street the other day, we discovered a sad, sad thing. The cake lady is GONE! We can no longer stop and make the cake lady uncomfortable as we stop and stare in at her messing up... Good times.

a New Fruit

Yesterday we discovered a new fruit (melon). Well, its not like we made any new discovery, but it is a new discovery for us! The flavor seems a cross between cantaloup and honeydew. Personally, I love it!
香瓜香瓜香瓜香瓜Oh, and we bought a new lens for our camera. Enjoy the pictures!

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MICHAEL!!!!!

Happy Birthday to our Michael! Hope he is having a wonderful day, full of tiger cakes and little birthday gifts! We love you, Michael!

Do you Believe in...

There is a song from the 60's entitled "Do you Believe in Magic". Over the past four days, while I insert the word "Miracles", I do have to believe. As you know, my travel has picked up and I went on what will be the first of three EMEA trips in six weeks on Tuesday evening. The trip was to have started on Sunday evening but a conference precluded a departure until Tuesday and took Paris off the itinerary. Before leaving on any international trip, I always ask mom if she has bad feelings. I think it goes back to my 1991 Hawaii trip...

Well, she was fine but I had some feelings and after discussing with her and praying about it, determined no reasons to not go. While there I didn't have any bad feelings so set the ponderings aside until last evening after I arrived home.

When I arose yesterday and jumped onto the computer, yes that is what I do when traveling, I discovered that my flight was canceled as were all other PM UA flights departing LHR. I determined to take the 12:00 flight as it still had seats. A miracle of it's self. So, we postponed the afternoon sales call and went to the 10:00 call. Pretty close you say? When we arrived we were advised by the LHR sales office that the flight was on a 12:45 decision. at 10:05 we received a call advising the flight had been moved up to 11:30. Well, I didn't panic and went ahead with our presentation figuring we were close enough to Heathrow that there would be no problems making the flight.

Well, at 10:30, as we were finishing the formal portion of the presentation, we received another call advising the flight had again been pushed up, this time to 11:15. OK, now it was time to move. I got a ride to the terminal, that was, by-the-way, empty, and sailed through security. Arrived at the gate 15 minutes prior to departure where the staff were hurrying people onto the aircraft.

To the chase, we were the last flight out of Heathrow yesterday and we made is 3 minutes before they closed the airport. At this point in time, it is unknown when Heathrow will reopen and North Atlantic traffic will resume. As mom and I talked last evening about the day, my feelings of earlier in the week came to me and I commented to mom that the issue with getting home on time was what was unsettling me. I am fully at peace.

Why the miracle? Well, you see, tomorrow is prom, it is the last prom and I really didn't want to miss it. Not just Marquie's last prom mind you... Love Dad

Are You Pretty Healthy?

My quote for the day: "Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out and shouting, 'Holy smokes...what a ride.!"

A mothers worst nightmare

Well, this may not be my worst nightmare but it is up there on the list. I had just finished putting away the laundry with Michael when we walked out to the living room and peeked out the window to check on the younger boys. And to my surprise I saw Jacob butt naked!! No panties, no socks, nothing! So, in a panic I ran to the front door which refused to open. AHHH!!! So, then I frantically ran down the stairs and out the garage and called him inside. Now I just have to wonder how long he was out there like that and how many people saw him. At least he has a cute little tooshie!

Happy Birthday to Me!

I know I was not home on my birthday but thought I would just let everyone know it was a great day and our kitchen order at IKEA is ready to call in! Yippee! After that we raced home, picked up the boys and James made some great chicken enchiladas that we enjoyed with guacamole and chips! Then to top it off we had that amazing strawberry shortcake. Yes, that is a triple layer cake--we are enjoying the 4th layer that didn't fit on today! And yes, it is as good as it looks, maybe even better! It was a fun day and the boys even took care of cleaning up the kitchen and doing all of the dishes for me! Happy birthday to me!

Quick update

I know, I am pathetic. Just thought I would take a quick second to update. Business is picking up for Joe now that the season has started. I am tired, my stomach is killing me, and the doctors know nothing. Big surprise there. April bashed her shin on the floor and has a scary nasty bruise. I really should get a picture of that. Chloe got a haircut and is thrilled. Ethan is still crazy, but sweet. I'm pretty sure he is taller every day. Collin thinks everyone is out to get him and gets easily frustrated when trying to communicate when upset. David just pulled through tooth 1 and is working on number 2. I'm hoping it is through before my trip next week. All are doing well with school. Crockpot is my favorite form of dinner and it snowed today. I think that pretty much sums it up.
He is just a pudgy cute.

We went to the Peggy Notebaert Museum. Pretty dumb, but great picture of the kids.

Easter

All morning I've been pondering this passage from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis. Just think—one day we'll be able to sit down with Mr. Lewis and chat about such glorious things!

Preface: Eustace, after more than a slight lack of humility, a touch of greed, and healthy dose of stupidity, had been turned into a dragon. In the night the great lion, Aslan, led him into the forest. Eustace relates the story to his cousin, Edmund:

"And it led me a long way into the mountains. And there was always this moonlight over and round the lion wherever we went. So at last we came to the top of a mountain I'd never seen before and on the top of this mountain there was a garden—trees and fruit and everything. In the middle of it there was a well."
"I knew it was a well because you could see the water bubbling up from the bottom of it: but it was a lot bigger than most wells—like a very big, round bath with marble steps going down into it. The water was as clear as anything and I thought if I could get in there and bathe, it would ease the pain in my leg. But the lion told me I must undress first. Mind you, I don't know if he said any words out loud or not."
"I was just going to say that I couldn't undress because I hadn't any clothes on when I suddenly thought that dragons are snaky sort of things and snakes can cast their skins. Oh, of course, thought I, that's what the lion means. So I started scratching myself and my scales began coming off all over the place. And then I scratched a little deeper and, instead of just scales coming off here and there, my whole skin started peeling off beautifully, like it does after an illness, or as if I was a banana. In a minute or two I just stepped out of it. I could see it lying there beside me, looking rather nasty. It was a most lovely feeling. So I started to go down into the well for my bathe."
"But just as I was going to put my feet into the water I looked down and saw that they were all hard and rough and wrinkled and scaly just as they had been before. Oh, that's all right, said I, it only means I had another smaller suit on underneath the first one, and I'll have to get out of it too. So I scratched and tore again and this underskin peeled off beautifully and out I stepped and left it lying beside the other one and went down to the well for my bathe."
"Well, exactly the same thing happened again. And I thought to myself, oh dear, how ever many skins have I got to take off? For I was longing to bathe my leg. So I scratched away for the third time and got off a third skin, just like the two others, and stepped out of it. But as soon as I looked at myself in the water I knew it had been no good."
"The lion said—but I don't know if it spoke—'you will have to let me undress you.' I was afraid of his claws, I can tell you, but I was pretty nearly desperate now. So I just lay flat down on my back to let him do it."
"The very first tear he made was so deep that I thought it had gone right into my heart. And when he began pulling the skin off, it hurt worse than anything I've ever felt. The only thing that made me able to bear it was just the pleasure of feeling the stuff peel off. You know—if you've ever picked the scab off a sore place. It hurts like billy-oh but it is fun to see it coming away."
"I know exactly what you mean," said Edmund.
"Well, he peeled the beastly stuff right off—just as I thought I'd done it myself the other three times, only they hadn't hurt—there it was, lying on the grass: only ever so much thicker, and darker, and more knobbly-looking than the others had been. And there was I as smooth and soft as a peeled switch and smaller than I had been. The he caught hold of me—I didn't like that much for I was very tender underneath now that I'd no skin on—and threw me into the water. It smarted like anything but only for a moment. After that it became perfectly delicious and as soon as I started swimming and splashing I found that all the pain had gone from my arm. And then I saw why. I'd turned into a boy again. You'd think me simply phoney if I told you how I felt about my own arms. I know they've no muscles and are pretty mouldy compared with Caspian's, but I was so glad to see them."
"After a bit the lion took me out and dressed me—"

As Elder Uchtdorf just said, it truly was all about love, was it not?

Sons, I Missed You

Well, Priesthood session last evening was a real mixed bag of feelings for me. First, the teachings were outstanding. Many personal questions were addressed and I came away with personal revelation and understanding. Second, I was alone. This was one of the few times I didn't have a son or "adopted" son, or home teaching son, or... with me. It was lonely. I missed each of you, James, Justin, Joe and Bryce, and wished were were attending together. I so wanted to go and get ice cream and chat about the session.

I have great memories of our times attending priesthood together and then going for ice cream. The first, eighteen years ago at Bridgemans in St. Paul. James, Grandpa Workman and me. April 2009 at Arctic Circle in West Jordan, Joe, Grandpa Hutchings and Me. A&W in Sandy in 2000, James, Jake, Joe, Justin and me; to name just a few.

Sons, thanks for the memories. I appreciate them and I do look forward to creating more together and for you to create them with your sons. That time is coming fast. James, in four years, Joe and Bryce in seven. Justin... well, sometime.

What do you think of this grandparent/grandchildren shot? Out of date I know but last summers are also out of date! Will have to do this again. Love you all.
