Photo Friday

We did it!  Carried it out without a single suspicion.  Thanks so much to Patrick and Marquie who set it up while we were out and Michelle and Bryce who braved the dangerous roads to come!  Couldn't have done it without you!  Wish the rest of you could have been here.

Emergency Preparedness

In light of the recent natural disasters that we have seen, and the fact that we were bracing for Hurricane Sandy to hit us, and because Justin asked,  I thought you might be interested to know the things that I see (with some consultation with Dad) that brought us the most comfort in preparing.  That way you can make sure you are prepared.

Of course, knowing we had food storage that would last a long time, was number one.  However, number one should probably be WATER STORAGE.  As the storm approached, the first thing off the store shelves was bottled water.  We have 5 gallon water bottles, that we use on a regular basis, that we fill from our tap.  We made sure all those were filled for drinking and cooking.  We also have 2 big drums filled with water that we could use for cleaning, bathing, etc.  The emergency preparedness people also suggested we fill our bathtubs with water.  I'm not sure how that would work with little children.  It may not be worth the risk.

The second thing was our household GENERATOR.  Now, it doesn't really run the whole house, but gives us power to our refrigerator and freezer, a few lights and outlets, and an ALTERNATIVE HEAT SOURCE. It also runs the pump and SEPTIC.  A generator also involves FUEL to run it.  We also have a small oven that plugs into an outlet that we can cook in. This also gave us the ability to RECHARGE OUR CELLPHONES.  It seems to me, from reading reports on the storm in New York and New Jersey, that those things are of prime importance.  Dad has colleagues in New York who have been without power for a week and a half now.

FILL YOUR VEHICLES WITH FUEL.  New York is rationing fuel.  I know it can't last forever, but you'd be one step ahead of everyone else.  Grandpa Workman has a good philosophy, keep your tank full.

BATTERIES.  We have flashlights and lots of AA batteries that don't run our flashlights.  Batteries also became a hard to find item.

AN ALTERNATIVE COOKING SOURCE.  I mentioned we have a small oven, but a nice camp stove or even your grill, as long as you have fuel, would work great.  For long term use, charcoal briquets and dutch ovens also work well.

Also, some EMERGENCY MEDICAL SUPPLIES might be in order.  A first aid kit, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, bleach (for disinfecting), clean cloths and bandages.

72 HOUR KITS.  You can find lots of information on these online.  The important thing is that you have one for each member of your family that you can grab and take with you if your home is in danger.

In case you are involved with a major disaster, find a way to communicate with a family member, if possible, so everyone knows what your situation is and if you need help.  People may not be able to get in touch with you.

As the storm approached, we knew we had the supplies to take us through.  But we still asked, is there any thing else we need to do.  We made cookies.

We were lucky.  We had advance notice to prepare and the storm skirted us.  Many of you live in tornado and earthquake country, you may not have the luxury of advance notice. We hope this is helpful to you, and as you have funds to do so, we hope you will add these basic things to your storage.

Vote, I Did

As I stood in the voting booth I began to cry.  I was overwhelmed with, well, how do I describe it?  I think "sacred honor and duty" is the best way to describe how I felt and how I am still feeling.  I thank my Heavenly Father and the Founding Fathers of this great and sacred country for the duty, privilege and honor of being part of something bigger and greater than me.  What a blessing!

I would like to share more but I believe if you will read on, James captured all that I would share.

Vote

You know, I live in a state where, as a moderately conservative thinker, my national vote counts for almost nothing. In fact, it might count for less than nothing, and I have hope that one day that will change. It didn't stop me from voting this morning, though, and I had an interesting experience as I did.

Gone are the days of slipping your ballot ceremoniously into a wooden box and hearing the satisfying "plunk" as the paper hits the bottom. And yes, I have done that. As I finished up and went over the the ballot machine that would silently accept my ballot like the world's largest vending machine dollar bill slot, I was overwhelmed by the feeling of doing something right. It was not just doing something good, it was the blessing and the heavy responsibility of doing what I was expected and allowed and chosen to do. We always talk about "being saved for the latter days" because of this or that or whatever is being taught during a particular Sunday School lesson. But being here and now is more than that; it is a privilege, a blessing, and a heavy responsibility not just because the days are waning and the earth is groaning under the burden it bears.

This is a day in which our choices are almost unlimited and a time in which we can do almost whatever we want to do without fear and without threat. That is a unique situation in history, and I think I understood it in a new way today. Because we have more choices, because we have more opportunities, because we are allowed to be whomever or whatever we want, our choices are that much more critical to our survival. We are not bound by the shackles of our past, but if we can't discern the right among the unlimited choices before us, we will slowly become bound by the shackles of the future.

I could live anywhere in the world, as could any of us, but I choose to live here where I have the choice and sacred opportunity to choose just one thing among an unlimited selection. I have the right and the responsibility to filter, weed, and search for the single decision that is the best in any given situation. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's almost impossible, but every time it is the same awe-inspiring opportunity and responsibility.

So there you go. Go make a choice today, and thank your Father in Heaven for one of these chances to choose just one among so many.

40 Years Ago Tonight

Or perhaps I could just say Happy Anniversary to us.

What are you talking about you ask?  Well, on Saturday, November 3, 1972, Lynne Workman "tolerated" a date with Byron Hutchings and was escorted to the to the Bingham High School Coronation Ball.  I guess the events of the evening probably deserve an extended grandpa story, so we will share only a few.  We were to have doubled with Uncle Roger (a story all it's own) but given a severe family fued he could not go.  I was certain I would have to cancel but a dispensation was granted and we had our first date.

How grateful I am for that evening.

pictures

I don't think our pumpkin pictures are on the computer yet, so here are just a couple i edited and like. :) I haven't taken legit photos for a long time, but I figured I should at least try and edit a bit. It's lots of fun :)

Photo Friday from Provo

As I sat on a meeting, 4:45 rolled around and I realized I had only 15 minutes to get to the poll to cast my vote. You see, I will be in Ohio on Tuesday, so I was left only with the option of an early vote. So I left my desk and ran across the street with the phone up to my ear. Lucky for me the early-voting poll is only a block away from my office. Unlucky for me, this is what I found when I got there (mind you this line went along the back and side of the Utah County Health Building).

And so ensued a 90 minute wait, only to find that because I had registered late, I had to cast a provisional ballot, and will have to return to the County Clerk's office next week to prove I live where I do. BUT, I still walked out with this!

Don't forget to let your voice be heard!

photo Friday...fun! fun! fun!

Lest you think this was Halloween...it wasn't. Bryce has those pictures on his phone. Bug him and he might post them. This is just a little dress up action and fun on our unproductive lawn mower . . . doesn't work. Curse the day it landed in our driveway. Lots of love!
